Surigao City Festival 2009

Surigao City Bonok Bonok Festival

P.V.G LogoA blaze of colour and pounding drums announced the start of  this years festival, although the sky was slightly overcast, the rain held off as everyone jostled for position along Borromeo St, the route that the contingents take as they dance their way to Rizal St. and the site of the new Surigao City stadium.

The Filipinos love of a festival is instilled into them from a very early age, as many mothers lined the street clutching toddlers that could hardly walk.

But hey this is not just a kids day out, there were just as many senior citizens (Lolos & Lolas) there enjoying the rhythm of the drums as each contingent passed bye. If you ever get a chance to visit the Philippines, you could do a lot worse than to spend a hour or two watching one of these street festivals & parades, as this party spirit is something I fear has been lost in many western cultures, save for the Caribbeans of course.
